PentaFluoroStyrene-based block copolymers controlled self-assembly pattern: A platform paving the way to functional block copolymers

Diblock copolymers of 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene (PFS) and butyl acrylate (BuA) were synthesized by nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP). By varying the conversion and/or BuA monomer to PPFS macro-initiator ratio, various molar compositions block copolymer BCP obtained. Due immiscibility both polymeric blocks, phase separation at nanometre scale occurred. The variety gave rise a large panel morphologies self-assembly. structuration nanodomains PPFS/PBuA BCPs studied AFM SAXS. Nanodomain sizes ranging from 30 45 nm depending on mass observed. Moreover, lability fluorine atom in para position aromatic ring PFS units allows for functionalization BCPs. Indeed, fluorine-thiol soft organo-catalysed substitution was performed with 1-hexanethiol as side group. thermal properties self-assembly pattern changes drastically incorporation alkyl moiety, acting an artificial increase volume fraction also matching solubility parameter value PBA block, i.e. no more nano-pattern is observed
